South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk and Kenya's Boniface Mucheru were a distant second and third respectively.

The second gold of the night for Botswana in Marrakech came in the men's 800m, where Nijel Amos, fresh from his victory at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, came on top in a race of tactics.

What was the most hotly anticipated race of day three saw Amos edge Ethiopia's Mohammed Aman by just two tenths, winning in 1min 48.54sec.

Algeria's Olympic 1500m winner from London 2012, Taoufik Makhloufi, won the bronze.

The men's 3,000m steeplechase was an all Kenyan affair when it came to the business end of the race.

Jairus Birech beat Glasgow 2014 winner Jonathan Ndiku in a time of 8:34.79

Olympic and world champion Ezekiel Kemboi finished in third.

Another winner from Glasgow 2014, Cornel Fredericks, also reigned supreme in Morocco.

The South African won men's 400m hurdles gold in 48.78, to beat Nigeria's Amaechi Morton into second and Kenya's Nicholas Bett into third.

In the women's 400m, Nigerian Folashade Abugan pipped Zambian Kabange Mupopo to gold, though both set the same time of 51.21.

The women's 1500m was won by Kenya's Hellen Obiri in 4:09.53, ahead of world junior champion Dawit Seyaum of Ethiopia and home town favourite Rabab Arafi.

Nigeria added to their medals collection by winning both the 4x100m relay races.

In the field events, Commonwealth Games winner Ese Brume of Nigeria dominated the women's long jump with 6.50 metres, while her countrywoman Chinwe Okoro achieved a Championship record in the discus - 59.79m

And the Moroccan crowd was given reason to cheer, when Ghizlane Siba won the women's high jump by leaping 1.80m.
