Barbosa tested positive for Methasterone metabolite in an out-of-competition blood and urine test on April 4, ahead of the Powerlifting World Championships in Dubai.

In 2009, he tested positive for Oxandrolone, which is an anabolic steroid.

He was handed a two-year suspension by the Brazilian National Paralympic Committee, which ended on May 15 2011.

Because April's positive test is the 40-year-old's second such doping offence, he has been banned for life, fined €1,500 (£1,195/$2,013), and had all his results since April 4 deleted.

He came sixth in the over 107kg division at the World Championships in April.

The sport of powelifting has been dogged by doping in recent months.

Four failed tests at the World Championships and have been suspended for two years.

They are Rashed Hassan Ahmed of the Unietd Arab Emirates, Oleg Gridassov of Kazakhstan, Roohallah Rostami or Iran and Ilfat Mukhatarov of Russia.

Colombia's Ivan Palacios failed a drugs test during the 2014 Para South American Games in the Chilean capital Santiago in March.

Last month, the International Paralympic Committee said it is considering taking action against National Paralympic Committees as part of measures to reduce the number of anti-doping violations in the sport.
