Arianna Errigo has secured victory in the women's foil event of the World Fencing Championships ©Getty ImagesItaly and Russia today claimed one gold medal apiece in the foil events on the second day of medal matches at the World Fencing Championships in Kazan, Russia.

In the women's competition at the Kazan Tennis Academy there were three medals for Italy, with London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Arianna Errigo securing the gold.

Silver went to her compatriot Martina Batini and bronze to another fellow Italian in the form of Valentina Vezzali.

The second bronze medal went to Ineso Boubakri of Tunisia.

Meanwhile, there was glory for the home side in the men's competition as Olympian Aleksey Cheremisinov defeated Ma Jianfei of China 15-11 to take the world title.

Another home athlete, Timur Safin, claimed a bronze medal, with the other going to France's Enzo Lefort.

Competition at the World Fencing Championships will continue tomorrow with the women's and men's épée medal matches.
