Lee, a gold medallist at Sydney 2000, was shooting consistently throughout the men's P1 10 metre air pistol competition in the German city, but could not get ahead of Malyshev who was proving more accurate than the South Korean.

After registering 10.1 and 10.7 in the seventh round Lee began to reel in the Russian, closing the gap even further with his penultimate effort.

The final round was a straight shoot-out between the two and it was Malyshev who faltered shooting a best score of 8.0, while his experienced opponent kept his cool to fire a 9.9 to take the win.

"At the end, I knew it was going down just down to one shot," said the 46-year-old.

"I felt very anxious, but I had belief in myself.

"The best thing is to have belief, and I knew that if he missed then I would win the gold medal."

Turkey's Cevat Karagol claimed bronze.

Lee's win also helped South Korea take the team gold.

In the women's P2 10m air pistol event, Iran's Sareh Javanmardidodmani qualified for the final in first place and maintained her superb form throughout to finish with a total score of 195.6 to claim her first World Championship gold.

Javanmardidodmani was pushed closely throughout by Krisztina David, but an elbow injury hampered the Hungarian's chances in the final and she had to settle for a silver with a score of 192.0.

Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's Olivera Nakovska-Bikova took bronze.

"I started shooting seven years ago and I have gained good experience in this time to be professional in these situations," said London 2012 bronze medallist Javanmardidodmani.

"Competition, especially at the world level, can create pressure and stress for any athlete.

"But this pressure is the same for every athlete and I just try to manage these pressures effectively.

"With this success, I will try to increase and accelerate my training to be ready to have a good result in the Incheon 2014 Para Asian Games and hopefully at the Rio 2016 [Paralympic Games]."

Team gold went to Ukraine.

The Championships in Suhl are due to take place until Saturday (July 26).
