The win also marked the third win this year for the 28-year-old following victories in Yokohama and London leaving her well clear of British duo Helen Jenkins and Jodie Stimpson in second and third respectively on the Series rankings.

Jorgensen, who also picked up the accolade in May, finished ahead of swimmer Katie Ledecky and water polo player Maggie Steffens.

Gymnast Eddie Penev picked up the Male Athlete of the Month prize in recognition of his performances at the World Challenge Cup in Anadia, Portugal.

The three-time national champion won gold in the floor exercise and vault events with scores of 15.225 and 15.625 respectively.

Meanwhile, the Team of the Month award was handed to the US women's water polo side who won gold at the International Aquatics Federation (FINA) World League Super Final in Kunshan, China.

The US side opened up with an 11-10 win over Russia and continued through to the final undefeated before overcoming Italy 10-8 in the decider to claim their eighth title in 11 appearances at the event.

Each National Governing Body can nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline for the awards.

A panel chooses the winners from the pool of nominees, with fan voting via Twitter accounting for 10 per cent of the total vote.
