Beginning in 2005 in partnership with recruitment specialists Adecco, the IOC Athlete Career Programme (ACP) provides support to elite athletes in the areas of education, life skills and employment.

It is viewed as a key stand of the current focus to inspire more young people to take up sport, with an aim to facilitate education as well as job opportunities for athletes during and after their sporting careers.

More than 10,000 athletes across 100 different countries have already benefited, it is claimed, including earlier this year at Sochi 2014 where information about the ACP was available in IOC spaces set up in all the Olympic Villages.

A customised app was also available.

The purpose of the ACP Forum is to bring together the representatives of different National Olympics Committees, as well as to interact with Adecco managers and Outreach Programme facilitators to share their best practices related to their ACP programmes.

The Forum has been held on a a biennial basis ever since the ACP was set up in 2005, with the last event taking place in November 2012 in Lake Placid in the United States.

An IOC spokesperson told insidethegames that around 100-125 participants are expected in the Peruvian capital, including several external speakers.

The Forum is the latest in a number of sporting events being awarded to Peru, with Lima selected as host city for the 2019 Pan American Games last October.

It will be hoped the Forum could also bring positive benefits for aspiring athletes in the the host nation, with the South American country having not won an Olympic medal since Barcelona 1992, when Juan Giha won a skeet shooting silver.

Their only gold came 44 years earlier, also in shooting, when Edwin Vásquez won the 50 metre pistol title at London 1948.
