Ashley Brace has been dropped from Wales' team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after complaints from the International Boxing Association ©Welsh BoxingWales have dropped Ashley Brace from their squad for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this month after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) refused to sanction her involvement.

Brace was among a trio of Welsh female boxers alongside Lauren Price and Charlene Jones when women's boxing makes its debut on the Commonwealth Games programme.

Brace was set to fight in the 51 kilogram category, which is due to include Nicola Adams, the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport when she won at London 2012 representing Britain.

But Brace has been ruled out because she had competed at the 2013 Unified Kickboxing World Championships, which makes her ineligible to compete.

"The Welsh Boxing Association has contacted AIBA to clarify this decision and accepts their ruling.

"It is with great disappointment that we can confirm boxer Ashley Brace will no longer compete for Team Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games," said Team Wales Chef de Mission Brian Davies.

"The Welsh Boxing Association has contacted AIBA to clarify this decision and accepts their ruling.

"Ashley is a fantastic young athlete with bags of potential and both Welsh Boxing and the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales are saddened that she now won't have the opportunity to compete at the Games in just two weeks-time."

A spokeswoman for the Lausanne-based AIBA confirmed the ban.

"The ineligibility of Ashley Brace is clearly explained in the AIBA Competition Rules, explicitly in rule 1. Membership and Eligibility, and in particular in its clauses 1.5 and 1.6," she told insidethegames.

"According to AIBA Competition Rule 1.5 'Any Boxer who has competed professionally in any Individual Physical Contact Sport will not be eligible to compete in any AIBA Competition at any level'.

"Ashley Brace had previously participated in the AIBA Women's World Championships in Barbados in 2010.

"However, she subsequently decided to compete in professional kickboxing from 2011 until 2013.

"We did not receive an application from the Boxer to refer her case to the AIBA Eligibility Committee and saw no need to put this case before a Committee review as this is an obvious violation of our Technical Rules."
