But Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg insisted  "These will go down in history as the best Commonwealth Games .

"I am confident we will deliver on that dream."

The Village is within walking distance of  Celtic Park, the football ground where the Queen is due to open the Games on July 2014.

"Our residents, the athletes are going to go wow!" Glasgow Head of Villages Tony Sainsbury said.

The Village, which is being given a test-run this weekend by a group of 200 specially invited guests, including insidethegames, has been five years in the making.

Before Glasgow 2014 took over the site, much of the land was contaminated  but now is a model of environmental conservation.

Each of the accommodation blocks is equipped with solar panels.

The residential areas are divided  into what organisers describe as "four unique Scottish quarters" - Castle, Clan, Loch and Mountain and will be staffed by some 2,000, many of whom are volunteers.

The Village is operational 24 hours a day and has been designed to  give athletes the perfect surroundings to relax as they build up to their competitions, officials claim.

A total of 150 chefs in the main dining room will offer a staggering 2,000 different items on the menu over the Games period.

These include the Scottish delicacy haggis, which will be offered at breakfast ,expected to be the busiest meal of the day.

Athletes will  be able to eat any time day or night, particularly important for those who are observing the Islamic festival of Ramadan, which clashes with the Games, due to last until August 3.

The cuisine on offer includes special Halal dishes but other tastes are also catered for including spicy kitchen, classic Scottish fare and a pizza parlour.

They have also set up a "casual " dining area which looks out across the River Clyde and offers a more leisurely dining experience.

If teams request it,  the caterers can lay on anything from a birthday cake to a full-blown barbecue.

In all organisers estimate they will serve over 400,000 meals in the Games period.

As during London 2012, the gymnasium is sure to be a focal point for many in the days up to their event, there are two here, in the north and south of the Village.

These are open 23 hours a day and shut only to allow cleaning to take place between five and six every morning.

In the event of any athlete breaking down, the polyclinic can call upon the expertise of medical staff in 11 different areas.

In fact, some 1,400 medical professionals, most working as volunteers will be on call throughout the Games to look after the competitors and other visitors to the Games

Unlike most recent Games Villages which have had a Mayor, Glasgow 2014  will have a "Chieftain".

The identity of the head of the Glasgow 2014 clan will be announced next week and will be the face of the Organising Committee there.

All that the Village staff would divulge was that he or she would be Scottish.

The word "selfie" has also made it into the Games Village dictionary.

There is a photo centre which will convert an athlete's "selfies" into special Glasgow 2014 post cards and even a computer app to let them do it online.

There will be no shortage of entertainment to greet the athletes from the moment they arrive.

Each nation will receive a welcome ceremony in the International Zone.

This recognises tradition with the raising of the flag but will also see what is promised to be a lively performance by the National Youth Theatre, who also participated at London 2012.

Other planned attractions in the Village include a Ceilidh , a traditional Scottish party and also a giant drum which will recognise the medal winners of Glasgow 2014.

Even the village washroom or "steamie " has got into the act to encourage the competitors.

"Tae au the Athletes,- guan yersel , an gie it laldy" which translated from Glaswegian means "give it your all and go as fast as you can".
