China secured two of three gold medals on offer on day one of the Suzhou Taekwondo Grand Prix ©WTFHosts China have taken an early lead at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Suzhou, picking up two of the three gold medals on offer on the opening day of competition.

Double Olympic champion Wu Jingyu began China's gold medal haul inside the Suzhou Sports Centeras she secured top honours in the women's under 49 kilogram division.

China's golden girl beat France's European silver medallist Yasmina Aziez 4-0 in the gold medal final to take the title and move a step closer to qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

South Korea's So-hui Kim and Hungary's Ivett Gonda secured the two bronze medals on offer in this contest after losing their semi-final final encounters with the two finalists.

Zheng Shuyin doubled China's medal count in the women's over 67kg category as the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games gold medallist toppled Mexico's Briseida Acosta 5-2 in the gold medal final.

Great Britain's European champion Bianca Walkden had to settle for bronze in this contest after withdrawing from her semi-final encounter with Shuyin due to a knee injury.

The other bronze was picked up by London 2012 gold medallist Milika Mandic of Serbia.

The final contest of the day saw Olympic silver medallist Anthony Obame, of Gabon, pick up gold in the men's over 80kg weight category.

The 2013 world champion,  winner of his country's first ever Olympic medal with his success at London 2012, crushed South Korea's 2008 Olympic champion Dong-min Cha 17-9 to seal the title and secure the $5,000 (£2,900/€3,700) prize fund on offer for category winners.

Britain's Mahama Cho, who took gold in the inaugural World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester last December, sealed one of the two bronze medals, with Iran's Sajiad Mardani securing the other.

A total of 236 have made the trip to China to compete in what is the first of three World Taekwondo Grand Prix series of 2014, with their sights set on the Grand Prix Finals in Querétaro, Mexico, in December and the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

Competition will continue in Suzhou tomorrow with the women's under 67kg contest, alongside the men's under 58kg and under 80kg competitions.
