The Tonga National Olympic Committee has celebrated this year’s Olympic Day with a cleanup of Neiafu ©TASANOCThe Tonga National Olympic Committee (TASANOC) has celebrated this year's Olympic Day with a cleanup of Vavaʻu's largest city, Neiafu, as part of an environmental project.

To mark the occasion, which is celebrated by International Olympic Committee (IOC) member nations around the world on June 23 each year, the body decided to add another dimension to the sporting activities already taking place.

TASANOC also requested that all schools on the island have a "day-off" for Olympic Day and this was granted on June 18.

The idea of the "Neiafu Clean-Up Project" was developed by TASANOC President Lady Robyn Tu'ivakano and Sam Judd of Sustainable Coastlines of New Zealand at the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) General Assembly in Guam last month, while TASANOC secretary general Takitoa Taumoepeau and sport development officer Hiko Fungavaka led the events on the island.

Taumoepeau said the project went well and was appreciated by the people of Vavaʻu, particularly as it is preparing to hold celebrations for the King of Tonga Tupou VI's birthday next month.

"We would like to thank the directors and principals of all the schools in Vavaʻu and the pupils and students who took part in the programme," read a statement from TASANOC.

"It was very warming seeing the children participating."
