Shuéme, a young female great white owl, has been unveiled as the official mascot for next year’s FIFA Women's World Cup ©FIFAShuéme, a young female great white owl, has been unveiled as the official mascot for next year's FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.

The mascot, which football's world governing body says, "embodies perfectly the spirit of the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015", was revealed to fans and the media at a special ceremony at the historic Canadian Museum of Nature in the nation's capital Ottawa.

Laureen Harper, wife of Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Olympian and World Cup footballer Kara Lang - who is an ambassador - and Canada 2015 chief executive Peter Montopoli were all in attendance at the event.

"Shuéme is a symbol for Canada and we are absolutely thrilled to introduce her to Canadians and the many fans of the women's game around the world," Montopoli said.

"A considerable amount of thought went into creating a character that children will adore, and that represents Canadians and the spirit of Canada from coast to coast."

Shuéme is a "sporty, elegant owl-about-town", said FIFA, "with colours that symbolise peace and fair play".

She has been designed to exude self-confidence and pride, with flowing contours that suggest grace under pressure, while her wings and tail ensure precise control and agility.

The name Shuéme, inspired by the French word for owl - chouette, has also been selected to signify Canada's status as a bilingual nation.

"Shuéme is the perfect embodiment of the values and qualities of women's football and she is certain to be a big hit with fans of all ages during the year ahead," FIFA marketing director Thierry Weil said.

"The importance of such a strong visual asset as part of the tournament's overall brand identity cannot be overstated and Shuéme, whose proud outlook incorporates spirit, grace and power, is a great recruit to the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 team."

Next year's Women's World Cup is due to take place across the six cities of Montreal, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Moncton from June 6 to July 5.
