Oktawia Nowacka of Poland en route to winning the Modern Pentathlon World Cup final in Sarasota ©UIPMOktawia Nowacka of Poland maintained her outstanding run of form this season by winning the Modern Pentathlon World Cup final at the Lakewood Ranch Polo Club in Sarasota-Bradenton.

Nowacka, who had taken two silvers and a gold in her last three World Cup Series appearances, continued in the same vein as she held off the challenge of Lithuania's world number one, the Olympic and world champion Laura Asadauskaite, who took silver ahead of Qian Chen of China, with Britain's Kate French finishing fourth.

Asadauskaite came from a long way back in the final combined part of the event, but despite clocking the best time, 12min 33sec, she remained 14 seconds adrift of the Pole, whose time was 12:58.

The Lithuanain finished with 1,323 points to Nowacka's 1,337.

Qian Chen finished with 1,320, and French 1,310.

Home athlete Margaux Isaksen's high hopes of a medal fell flat as she had to settle for eighth place, finishing 50sec behind the winner.

Nowacka had set up her victory with a consistent performance, finishing 11th in the ride and fifth in the swim before clearing the equestrian obstacles with only two knockdowns.

The day had began with Viktoria Tershuk winning the fencing but the experienced Ukrainian was eliminated in the ride and found herself way down at the start of the combined.

French finished ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympic champion Lena Schoneborn of Germany and sixth-placed Ekaterina Khuraskina of Russia.
