The 5,000 and 10,000 metres champion at London 2012 took to Twitter to confirm he will race, but has kept tight-lipped on which event, or events, he will bid for gold in.

"Hi guys! I will be running in the Commonwealth Games this year. See you in Glasgow," Farah, who also won the 5,000m-10,000m double at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Moscow last year, wrote on Twitter.

"Haven't decided which events to compete in: 1500m, 5,000m, 10,000m. Will let you know as soon as I decide."

Farah, 31, holds the UK records in all three events.

Farah withdrew from the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 a month before they began because of fatigue.

Glasgow 2014 organisers have been hoping the event will attract the biggest names in athletics to compete at Hampden Park, and Briton's Farah is a major coup.

His participation looked to be on the cards when he spoke last year after being unveiled as one of the faces of Virgin Media, a Games sponsor.

Farah said 12 months ago: "I love competing on home turf and I hope to run in Glasgow in 2014.

"The Scottish crowd is always very passionate about athletics."

Farah he had always insisted that he would wait until after the Virgin London Marathon in April before making his decision.

He had finished a slightly disappointing eighth in London in 2 hours 08min 21sec and his coach Alberto Salazar revealed afterwards that Farah would probably concentrate on defending his 5,000m and 10,000m titles at Rio 2016.

Six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt, who also features in adverts for the company, has yet to announce if he will compete in Glasgow - which would also be his first Commonwealth Games. In March, Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg said he was optimistic the big names would come to the city to compete.

"Since London 2012 we have had an enormous response from athletes indicating that they will be coming to Glasgow 2014 to compete and I think it will be unprecedented in terms of Commonwealth Games history," he said.

"In terms of Usain Bolt, I think he has made all the right sounds so far but ultimately the final entry [list] is not until June and that will be the starting point for us.

"Ultimately, selection is the authority of the Commonwealth Games Associations and we are working very closely with them across all sports to make sure that the stage is set and they see this as an attractive proposition and has the gravitas and global appeal so they see this as the place they want to be.

"Six weeks before the Games is when the teams will be putting in their final entries so from that standpoint it's not written in bold yet."

Bolt's Jamaican counterpart Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 100m gold medallist, is one big name who has already confirmed she will race in Glasgow.

The Games are due to open on July 23 and run until August 3.
