Switzerland are the 2014 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship gold medallists ©World Curling Federation April 30 - Switzerland has secured gold at the 2014 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship after beating Sweden 8-6 at the Dumfries Ice Bowl in Scotland.

Swiss cousins Michelle and Reto Gribi scored one point to get the game underway before Sweden's Camilla Johansson and Per Noreen came back to score three points in the second end to make it a 3-1 lead.

The eventual silver medallists stole two more points in the third end, but Switzerland bounced back in the fourth, scoring two points to go into the halftime break just 5-3 down.

Switzerland levelled the score at 5-5 with another steal of two points in the fifth end, and then made it a 6-5 in the sixth end.

They stole another two points to finish the seventh end 8-5 up, and Sweden could only score one point with their final shot to give a final score of 8-6 to Switzerland, who in winning took their fifth victory in the eight-year history of the Championship.

"It's great, it's awesome, we need a little time for it to sink in I think," Reto said after the game.

Michelle paid tribute to their opponents and praised their performance.

"They played very well and in the end it came down to the very last stone," she added.

The bronze medal game saw Spain winning their first ever World Curling Championship medal when they beat defending champions Hungary 7-4.

"We're speechless," Spain's Sergio Vez said.

"We didn't even imagine getting to the playoffs.

"We're here, we played for bronze, we've won it, but we don't believe it...it's awesome really.

"You don't know how important this is for curling in Spain.

"We have no arenas so maybe now people will like to spend money on curling resources.

"We are really looking forward to coming back to Spain with our medals."

Meanwhile, Canada's men and Scotland's women were crowned World Senior Curling Champions after winning their gold medal games, also in Dumfries, today.

Sweden's men lost 7-2 in just six ends to the Canadian champions but take the silver, with Australia claiming the bronze.

In the women's event, Scotland secured the gold with a 6-5 win over Canada, while the United States took the bronze.
