The National Ice Skating Association (NISA) has submitted a bid in partnership with Glasgow City Council, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, EventScotland and UK Sport.

The International Skating Union (ISU) is expected to choose the winning bid after its Congress in Dublin from June 9 to 13.

Birmingham was the last British city to host the Championships in 1995, with London in 1950 before that.

If successful, Glasgow will stage events in the newly built 12,000-seater SSE Hydro, which will host gymnastics and netball at the Commonwealth Games this summer.

It will also host the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships, which run from October 23 to November 1.

Organisers say the venue will provide a "campus-based Championship with all athlete accommodation, training and competition rinks on one site".

"It [the Championships] is one of the largest annual ice skating events in the world attracting more than 170 skaters from almost 40 countries in a superb showcase of figure skating," said NISA chief executive Nick Sellwood.

"Our bid comes on the back of the hugely successful ISU European Figure Skating Championships 2012 which we hosted in Sheffield.

"We hope to build on this with the staging of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2017."

If Glasgow win the bid, it will be the first time Scotland has hosted the Championships.

Liz Nicholl, UK Sport chief executive, said the organisation was "delighted" to be working on the bid.

She added: "We have been working hard over the last 18 months to be in a position to present a proposal to the ISU that is not only exciting and innovative, but which also has the development of ice skating within the UK at its core.

"The ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2017 being bid for as part of UK Sport's Gold Event Series demonstrates our continuing significant commitment to winter sports following the unprecedented success of Sochi 2014 where our athletes provided so many inspirational performances."

Sochi's bid for the 2017 World Figure Skating Championships was cast in doubt last week after it was criticised by Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko for being submitted without Government approval.

The ISU has declined to say whether any other bids have been launched.

The most recent Championships were held in Saitama, Japan, last month.

Shanghai in China is due to hold the 2015 event, with Boston in the United States the host in 2016.
