Cathy Wong was selected during a Board meeting of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC).

It also named Lyndall Fisher as Chef de Mission for the Commonwealth Games, which is due to get underway on July 23.

She was involved in the Fiji Amateur Swimming Association until 2003 as secretary and treasurer and was also secretary and President of Women's Golf Fiji from 1994 to 2001.

Fisher has spent the last 21 years as a member on the country's Women in Sports Commission.

She will be supported by Wayne O'Connor, who has been appointed administration manager for the Commonwealth Games.

Fiji had been barred from the Commonwealth Games following a 2006 military coup, but was readmitted last month ahead of a return to democratic elections planned for later this year.

FASANOC President Reg Sanday revealed five general managers have also been appointed for the Pacific Games, which will be held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: Neelu Nand, Craig Strong, Caroline Williams-Whippy, Jovilisi Yaya and Paul Yee.

"We have a mixture of experience and youth and they will work very closely with Wong," Sanday said.

Wong won the Women in Sport award from the IOC last year for promoting gender equality in sport.

It cited Wong as the "first professional female to break through the male dominated field of rugby sports administration in Fiji Rugby".

It added: "Through her perseverance and dedication and professionalism, female physiotherapists are now appointed to accompany national rugby teams on merit."

Speaking of her appointment as Chef de Mission for the 2015 Pacific Games and Rio 2016 Olympics, she said: "I am honoured and thankful and blessed for this opportunity.

"And we are going to get to work straight away and meet this Saturday with the general managers to map out our plans for the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea."

Fisher said: "I am honoured to be selected and I understand the enormity of the task and the event.

"It will be challenging because we have only three months to prepare for the event."
