April 6 – Malta's men maintained their 100 per cent start to the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships with a win over Scotland ©Scottish SwimmingMalta's men were the only side to maintain their 100 per cent start to the 2014 Commonwealth Water Polo Championships as they defeated hosts Scotland at the Aberdeen Aquatics Centre today.

Both sides came into the clash off the back of impressive opening day wins over New Zealand and Wales, but it was the Maltese who came away with the spoils to disappoint the home crowd.

Despite making a strong start the Scots chances were severely dented after James Scobie, who starred in the win over the Kiwis yesterday, was majored out of the game midway through the second quarter.

The Maltese took full advantage and led by Nikki Lanzon, they powered their way to a 17-8 victory, aided by six goals from their star forward.

The other two men's matches on the day both ended in draws as Wales registered their first points of the Championship against Singapore, while Southern Hemisphere rivals New Zealand and South Africa played out a 6-6 draw.

Welsh centre forward Dan Luxton starred again for his side bagging seven goals, but they could not shake off a dogged Singapore side who were led by Lin Diyang and Paul Tan.

Both sides could not be separated throughout and Singapore were denied a win at the death after Tan's long shot from his own half beat the Welsh keeper but hit the post right on the final buzzer.

Meanwhile on the women's side, there was further disappointment for the Aberdeen faithful as Scotland went down to Canada, who were making their first appearance of the Championships.

Kyra Christmas and Amy Yule were the stars for the Canadians as they led their side to a convincing 23-3 win over the host nation.

The first match of the day in Aberdeen saw England's women's send out an ominous message to the rest of the field and justify their status as one of the favourites for gold by hammering Wales 35-1.

Kathryn Fowler and Rosie Huck scored five goals each and Chloe Wilcox grabbed six as their team's counter-attacking play was too much for the Welsh.

Competition at the Aberdeen Aquatics Centre continues through until Saturday (April 12).

The final two days of the competition will be streamed live on the Scottish Swimming website.
