April 1 - Glasgow 2014 has opened the first of more than 40 official merchandise stores today ©Glasgow 2014The first of more than 40 Glasgow 2014 official merchandise stores opened today as weightlifter Peter Kirkbride joined Games mascot Clyde at the city's Central Station.

The public will now have the opportunity to browse through and pick up the latest Glasgow 2014 merchandise, replicas of official mascot Clyde, as well as Team Scotland goods from the store in Central Station which will be open seven days a week.

"We are delighted to be opening our first official merchandise store in the heart of Glasgow," said Glasgow 2014 deputy chief executive Ty Speer, who was joined by Delhi 2010 silver medallist Kirkbride to cut the ribbon.

"Central Station is one of Glasgow's main commuter hubs with around 750,000 people passing through every week making it the ideal place to showcase our range of Glasgow 2014 goods.

"For people arriving in Glasgow for the Games, the retail store will be their first experience of Glasgow 2014 and we are confident it will be a memorable one."

The store, run by Venue Retail 2014 Limited, is the first of more than 40 planned for locations across the city as well as in competition venues, with organisers claiming they will create hundreds of temporary jobs in Glasgow in the build-up to and during the Games, which is due to take place from July 23 to August 3.

"Team Scotland is anticipating massive levels of home support at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games," said Commonwealth Games Scotland chairman Michael Cavanagh.

"What better way for the whole of Scotland to get behind the team, show their support and play their part in the team's success than wearing our traditional team colours and bearing our distinctive logo."
