As part of elections held during an Ordinary Session of the African basketball Executive Committee in the Ivory Coast capital Abidjan, Tunisia beat off opposition from Angola and the Central African Republic to be awarded the 28th edition of the event.

Tunisia,  continental champions in 2011, will host the men's competition for the third time but the first time in almost three decades after previously doing so in 1965 and 1987.

They are the third highest ranked team in the continent and 23rd in the latest world rankings.

Cameroon, meanwhile, will host the Championships for the first time, after beating off opposition from Angola and Ivory Coast to host the 24th edition of the women's event

Their success has been hailed as evidence of the sport's growth and exposure in recent years following their best ever finish of fourth place at the 2013 event in Mozambique.

In a nod to the forced transfer of hosting rights for many recent sporting events in Africa, for political and financial reasons, Angola have been placed on standby to stage either the male or female events should Tunisia or Cameroon fail to meet host-nation demands.

As well as offering the chance to be named the best team in the continent, the winners of each Championships will gain automatic qualification for the next Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, while the teams which finish second and third will compete against nations from other continents in a final qualification tournament.

During the Session, Madagascar and Mali were also awarded the AfroBasket Under-18 men and women's Championships respectively while, in the clubs category, Ivory Coast and Tunisia will host the final rounds of the men's and women's Africa Champions Cup.
