March 10 - The South Korea Baseball Hall of Fame is scheduled to be open in October 2016 ©WBSCBusan has been chosen as the site for South Korea's first official Baseball Hall of Fame after an agreement was announced between the city, the Korea Baseball Organisation (KBO) and the County of Gijang-gun.

Busan, which is situated in the south east of South Korea, was selected ahead of rival bids from capital Seoul and Incheon and the new facility is expected to be up and running by October 2016, reports South Korean new agency Yonhap

The Hall of Fame is part of the KBO's plans to celebrate more than 100 years of baseball and over 30-years of professional baseball in the country, which began in 1982 with the introduction of the first professional baseball league.

Busan Metropolitan City officials have proposed to build a three-storey building to house the Hall of Fame which is set to feature an exhibition hall, a video room and a conference room as well as a wide variety of memorabilia.

The Hall of Fame will be managed by the KBO while Gijang-gun County will provide the land for the facility free of charge which will be surrounded by a baseball-themed park.

The park will contain four regular baseball fields, two youth fields, a softball field and an indoor baseball practice field.

According to Busan officials, construction is due to start in October next year, with 11.5 billion won (£6.4 million/$10.7 million/€7.7 million) of funding coming from the city while 22.3 billion won (£12.5 million/$21 million/€15 million) will come from Gijang-gun county.

An unofficial Korea Baseball Hall of Fame already exists in the city of Seogwipo on Jeju Island.

The museum, which is not affiliated with the KBO, is the personal collection of former KBO head Lee Kwang-hwan and was originally opened in 1995.

The collection contains game-worn uniforms, gloves and bats, along with photos, videos, books and trophies.
