More than 50,000 people applied to be volunteers at the Games and many of the 15,000 "Clyde-siders" that were chosen joined mascot Clyde at the unveiling of the uniforms, with 138 days to go until the Opening Ceremony across the road at Celtic Park.

A lucky few got the chance to model the outfits manufactured by outdoor clothing firm Trespass, who have also created the uniforms for the Games technical officials.

The workforce staff will be kitted out in red polo shirts, grey trousers, red and white soft shell jackets, red cagoules and grey hats, while the technical officials' uniform will be grey, blue and green.

They will also be given matching bags, umbrellas and a water bottle supplied by official supporter of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, A.G. Barr.

The Clyde-siders joined with Glasgow 2014 staff and wider workforce in the first of four events taking place at venues in Glasgow today and tomorrow, which will see 18,000 people attending, according to organisers.

As well as unveiling the uniforms, the events give the entire workforce involved in delivering Glasgow 2014 an insight into the history of the Games, the function of the Organising Committee, the Queen's Baton Relay and an idea of what they can expect during the Games which are expected to attract more than a million spectators over the 11 days of action from July 23 to August 3.

"The orientation events today are on a scale never quite seen before in Glasgow and Scotland and we have been thrilled by the enthusiasm shown by the entire workforce," said Valerie Mitchell, head of Games Workforce at Glasgow 2014.

"The Games Time uniform is always one of the most eagerly anticipated milestones and the reaction from people today has been great.

"This is just one more milestone though on the journey to the Games and the next steps will be the more role-specific training for people."

In May, Event Leadership training will take place with venue training sessions scheduled for June, before the real thing is due to start in July.

Here - where the badminton competition will take place during the Games, while the adjoining Sir Chris Hoy Veldrome will stage the cycling events - the crowd was treated to a demonstration of a number of sports including badminton, rugby sevens, gymnastics and athletics.

Olympic champion sprinter and four-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Allan Wells joined BBC presenter Hazel Irvine and local radio DJ and comedian Des Clarke during the two-hour show.

And when the big moment arrived, out stepped Clyde and his Clyde-siders to reveal the much anticipated uniform.

Felicity Bryant was one of the Clyde-siders lucky enough to be chosen to be a model for the unveiling.

"It was brilliant fun," she said.

"Not only did I get to see the uniform for the first time, I actually got to try it on and be part of the show.

"It was a fantastic experience and just seeing how many people were here today made me realise that it is all becoming real now.

"I can't wait for Games Time and will be proud to be wearing my uniform and be associated with the Games."

The task of distributing the uniform will begin in April, a year after organisers began whittling down the 25,000 people they selected for it's volunteer programme interviews.

Those that were selected for the workforce will have Games Time roles ranging from spectator services and press operations to anti-doping, protocol and transport.

"It was a proud and emotional moment for me to stand in front of the thousands of people who will make these Games a reality," said Glasgow 2014 chairman Lord Smith.

"From 2007, when the bid was accepted, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games were a far-off prospect.

"To be here today to see the amazing army of people who will make the Games  great was a very special moment.

"I think the uniform is terrific and I am glad Clyde has his.

"I look forward to seeing the workforce wear it with pride in our venues across Glasgow and Scotland."
