The first of the Go Sports Criterium Series events is due to take place on February 1 followed by another race on March 22 with the third and final instalment coming on April 26.

The series is designed to cater for more experienced cyclists in the Gulf region, and offers the opportunity for riders to test themselves and improve their fitness.

The races will be held at intermediate and advanced level, with the race lasting for one hour plus one lap around the eight kilometre closed loop circuit at Nad Al Sheba, which has been converted from an unused camel racing course into a bicycle track.

At the end of the three-race series an overall winner in the intermediate and advanced categories will be crowned while there will also be prizes for the fastest lap, the sprint lap and the most laps completed in the fastest time.

The most improved rider in the intermediate category will also be recognised.

The move is part of a wider drive to promote the sport of cycling in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Gulf region, with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) aiming to increase the cycling network in and around the city by 50 kilometres per year.

"Cycling has grown tremendously over the past few years, and events of this nature provide yet another opportunity for cyclists to enjoy their sport while improving their skills.
