Arguably the most impressive result of the day was achieved by Kennaugh who lapped the entire field on a stunning seven occasions to dominate the points race.

After following his London 2012 gold medal by playing a crucial role in inspiring Team Sky team-mate Chris Froome to victory in the 2013 Tour de France, the Isle of Man rider has begun 2014 in similarly impressive fashion.

It was Kennaugh's double Olympic gold medal winning teammate Clancy who took the greatest plaudits however when he teamed up with Ollie Wood to break the world record en route to victory in the 1 kilometre Madison time trial.

Clancy's scorching first lap set the pace and they managed a jaw-dropping time 54.537sec, which obliterated the mark set by two legends of the track, six-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy and French star Arnaud Tournant.

Another British star on show was the double Olympic champion Laura Trott but, despite producing the biggest cheer of the day, she endured a frustrating day at the office after being defeated in the elimination race before suffering a heavy crash in the scratch race.

Rising star Katie Archibald shone to win the elimination race, beating other Olympic champions Dani King and Jo Rowsell as well as Trott, while Wiggle Honda youngster Elinor Barker prevailed in the scratch race.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Jason Kenny then won the men's sprint final, while there was international success for the Netherlands Elis Ligtlee when she triumphed in the women's event.
