Wheelchair dance sport has risen in popularity in recent years ©Getty ImagesDecember 8 - Ukrainian husband and wife team of Nadiia and Ivan Sivak provided a highlight with a second title to bring the IPC Wheelchair Dance Sport World Championships to a close in Tokyo.

Following victory in the Latin duo class yesterday the pairing completely dominated the standard class after achieving a perfect score for their tango dance as well as impressive results in the waltz.

They finished ahead of two Russian pairings - with Irina Gordeeva and Dmitry Torgunov taking silver and Snezhana Shepeleva and Nikolay Kuzin bronze.

"The main task that our coach sets is to have fun while dancing and to bring pleasure and satisfaction from our dancing to audience and judges," said the Ukrainian champions, who married in 2009 on the same date as the International Day of Dance.

Russia still ensured plenty of success however and world number one's Galina Rhyzkhova and Viachslav Osipov completed a superb 2013 with a gold in the combi Latin class with a spectacular rumba the outstanding highlight of their five dances.

Fellow countrymen Ruzanna Kazarian and Aleksei Fotin also recorded near-perfect marks for all five of their dances as they won the due standard class one event, however Ukraine kept up the challenge to their neighbours by claiming a medal in every event held on day two.

Illona Slugovnya and Mykhairo Annienkov provided another highlight by winning gold in the combi Latin class one event.

This was not quite enough however, for Ukraine to displace Russia at the top of the medals table, with the Russians leading the way with eight medals, including three gold, in comparison with Ukraine's six medals and three golds, with Slovakia's three medals placing them a distant third.
