In 2012, the European governing body for badminton introduced a new bidding procedure for its events allowing interested member associations to bid earlier for specific competitions and allowing them to put themselves forward for these competitions for multiple years in a row.

Under the new procedure, member associations are able to submit bids at a much earlier date, with Badminton Europe allocating the events far sooner than they did previously.

Badminton Europe also released new criteria in which potential bidders must meet in order for a bid to be approved.

If a bid meets these criteria and the future hosts provide an indicative rights fee then Badminton Europe's Council will allocate the event at its earliest convenience.

If the member association meets the criteria but does not provide the indicative rights fee then a three month period will be opened for other member associations to submit a rival bid with the Badminton Europe Council then choosing between these competing associations in their first meeting following the expiry of the three months.

The new procedure has been met with positive feedback from a majority of member associations and has seen the likes of Poland and France set to host a number of future European events.

Earlier this month Poland was confirmed as host of four European Championship events including the Mixed European Championships in 2017, the 2015 European Junior Championships, the 2016 European Under-17 Championships and the 2018 European Club Championships, with France set to host the 2016 European Championships and the 2017 European Junior Championships.

Also introduced in the new bidding process was the right for Badminton Europe to allocate an event immediately to a member association even if the indicative fee is not paid, should the competition in question be within the next 12 months.

This procedure was put in place to allow the quick selection of a new host city in the event of a withdrawal prior to the start of a major competition and to ensure all European Championships take place within the period set by the Council.
