December 4 - Great Britain men's ice hockey captain Luke Piggott will carry the British flag at the Trentino 2014 Opening Ceremony ©BUCSBritain men's ice hockey captain Luke Piggott claims he and his teammates are heading to the Trentino 2013 Winter Universiade with realistic targets as the squad continue final preparations with one week left until the Opening Ceremony.

As well as leading his teammates on the ice in Trentino, the 27-year-old has the extra honour of being the official flag bearer for the British team at what will be his third Universiade appearance following on from Turin 2007 and Harbin 2009.

"Everybody is pretty excited about getting out there," Piggott told insidethegames.

"Representing your country is an honour and carrying the flag for the whole group is even better."

But, the man originally from Calgary in Canada before moving to the United Kingdom with his British parents at the age of nine, believes Team GB will be one of the underdogs in the ice hockey tournament after being drawn in a tough group.

"I think it is going to be difficult for us," he said

"The teams we are coming against are more traditional hockey nations.

"We have got the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia and all three of those have produced a lot of world-class hockey players that have gone to play in the National Hockey League over the years.

"The Russians in particular are one of the top sides in the world and they are ranked right up there in the top five.

"There are going to be some tough games for us but it will definitely be a learning experience for us.

"As long as we can play well together as a team then hopefully we can give ourselves a shot at keeping the games as competitive as possible.

"It will be a tough tournament for sure and we need to be realistic with our targets."

Piggott has been combining his commitments of playing for the Cardiff Devils in the British Elite League with his studies in medical biochemistry which has seen him involved in discovering a breakthrough treatment in combating the spread and relapse of breast cancer.

After completing a PhD in cancer research at Cardiff University earlier this year, Piggott now combines his time on the ice with working as a postdoctoral research associate at the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute, based in Cardiff.

Men's hockey coach Matt Bradbury is confident Piggott and his teammates will perform to their maximum in Trentino and expects them to enjoy the experience of competing against the best.

"We are aiming to make a positive impact on the competition, and for our experience in Trentino to be a truly memorable one," he said.

In all there are 52 British athletes travelling to Trentino to compete in men's and women's ice hockey and curling, as well cross-country skiing and snowboard cross.

The women's curling team, which includes Claire Hamilton, Anna Sloan and Vicki Adams, are the reigning Universiade champions having won in Harbin two years ago.

Thomas Muirhead, younger brother of Eve Muirhead who will skip the British squad at Sochi 2014, is travelling to Trentino as part of the men's curling team.

"With just one week until the Opening Ceremony I am pleased to report that Team GB are well prepared and excited to start competing in Trentino," said Chef de Mission Neil Rogers.

"This is our second-largest ever delegation, and each team has spent recent weeks training and preparing specifically for this unique multi-sport event.

"We greatly look forward to settling into our Games accommodation and for all the action to start."

The Trentino 2013 Winter Universiade is due to take place from December 11 to 21 and will feature around 1,800 athletes from 60 countries competing across a total of 13 sports.
