Next year's event, which runs from October 31 to November 2, will be the first time that Kelowna has staged the Skate Canada International which forms part of the ISU Grand Prix series.

"We are thrilled that Kelowna will be the host community for Skate Canada International in 2014," said Jim Gabriel, active living and culture divisional director with the City of Kelowna.

"Alongside our local skating club volunteers who will play an integral role in delivering the event, we're confident that the community will showcase Kelowna's assets to the thousands of spectators and millions of viewers world-wide.

"This event is the first to receive funding support from the City through our Strategic Development Fund, which was established, in part, to attract and secure large scale events that will enhance our community and create a dynamic environment.

"We are truly looking forward to welcoming Skate Canada and the global figure skating community to our city in 2014."

Kelowna will be the second of six Grand Prix events in the 2014 season and will follow on from the Skate America meeting in October, before the tour moves onto to the Cup of China, Trophée Eric Bompard in France, Rostelecom Cup in Russia and the NHK Trophy in Japan, which all take place in November.

The venues for these events have yet to be finalised, as has the host city for the Grand Prix Final which is scheduled for December next year.

"Skate Canada is pleased to bring this highly anticipated international sporting event to Kelowna," said Skate Canada chief executive Dan Thompson.

"It will really mark the beginning of the next four years of skating competition building towards the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

"With an enthusiastic team of volunteers from Skate Canada British Columbia/Yukon, the partnership of the Province of British Columbia, the tremendous support from Tourism Kelowna, and the City of Kelowna, there is a wonderful team prepared to stage this event.

"We know the fans and the competing athletes will all be warmly welcomed to a beautiful part of our country."

Last month, Saint John, New Brunswick played host to the 2013 Skate Canada International, which saw home wins for Olympic ice dancing champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and triple men's world champion Patrick Chan, who followed up their victories with further golds at last week's Grand Prix in Paris.

The 2013 season now moves onto Moscow for the Rostelecom Cup before the season-ending Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka, Japan, next month.
