November 21 - Mike Shea looked impressive in Landgraaf as he won the opening event of the season © Getty Images American Mike Shea and Dutchwoman Bibian Mentel warmed-up for the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Alpine Skiing Snowboard Cross World Cup in Landgraaf by taking the men's and women's titles at the Europa Cup event taking place at SnowWorld.

Former World Cup winner Shea strung together three impressive runs at the world's biggest indoor ski resort to clock a time of 1min 07:28sec to take the first event of the season in the men's lower-limb impairment competition.

The Czech Republic's Tomas Vaverka had looked like he was going to take the gold following a good second run which put him into the lead but Shea regrouped to nail his final run and grab the title ahead of the world number five.

The American served a one-month suspension from the sport earlier this year after returning an adverse analytical finding for Buprenorphine in a urine sample provided at the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing Snowboard Cross World Cup in Sochi.

Shea's teammate and world number number three Keith Gabel clocked a time of 1:11:24 to take the bronze medal.

In the upper-limb impairment class, it was an all Italian battle at the top as joint world number one snowboarders Roberto Cavicchi and David Preziosi fought it out for the gold medal.

In the end just 00:70secs separated Cavicchi from second-placed Preziosi with Spain's Adrian Garcia Fresneda completing the podium.

Meanwhile, there was delight for Dutch fans as home favourite Mentel took top spot in the women's lower-limb event.

The 2012 world champion replicated the final world ranking standings from last season by finishing ahead of big rival Amy Purdy of the United States.

The 41-year-old put in three sub-38 second runs to finish with an overall time of 1:17:72, more than 12 seconds clear of the American.

Lisa Bunschoten finished behind her compatriot in third place with a time of 1:29:77.

With snowboarding set to make its Paralympic Games debut at Sochi 2014, this year will represent one of the biggest in the careers of all the competitors taking part in the 2013-2014 season as they will be looking to ensure they book a place on the plane to Russia next year.

Attention will now move to tomorrow's World Cup event as over 40 athletes from 17 countries will be looking to impress as the season gets up and running.
