It is feared Turner may have been deliberately targeting after publicising the date of the funeral, although the 33-year-old insists that he does not regret doing that because "his mum would have wanted people to know about it".

His car has been found dumped in nearby Bilborough although other possessions are yet to be recovered.

It continues an unfortunate year for Turner, who missed the summer campaign through injury and was thereafter removed from the list of National Lottery funded athletes for next season. 

But, after being dropped from National Lottery funding on a previous occasion in 2008 he responded with gold at both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships in 2010 before taking a World Championship bronze at Daegu the following year.

His personal best of 13.22sec puts him third on the all time British rankings behind Tony Jarrett and the former world record holder Colin Jackson.

He is hoping to return in time for next year where he will compete against fellow British hurdlers Lawrence Clarke and William Sharman in the defence of his Commonwealth title.

The hurdler is also not the first sports star to be robbed - with many having been deliberately targeted while attending competitions.

Others to have suffered recently include Argentinian tennis star Juan Martin del Potro, who lost his passport, money and a rosary blessed by Pope Francis in Paris last week after stopping to sign an autograph.
