November 3 - Nabil Guedoun was the main man for Algeria as they claimed the African Wheelchair Basketball titleAlgeria upset the odds at the African Men's Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Luanda as they overcame reigning champions South Africa in a high quality final.

South Africa came into the Championships, moved from Egypt to Angola over security fears, looking to retain the crown they won in Rabat two years ago and were firm favourites to take the continental title once again.

In their semi-final, the South Africans, Africa's sole representatives at the last two Paralympic Games in Beijing and London respectively, looked impressive as they despatched Egypt 73-54 but they came up against a determined and focussed Algerian side whose semi-final win over Morocco was their sixth straight win of the tournament.

It was the North African nation who carried on that impressive form at the Cidadela Pavilion by making it seven-in-a-row and taking the continental title with a 66-56 win.

Tournament MVP (most valuable player) Nabil Guedoun was the star throughout for the Algerians who secured an automatic qualification spot for next year's International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) World Championships in Incheon, South Korea.

In the third-place game, Egypt defeated Morocco 71-68, while in the fifth-place game Nigeria beat Angola 51-48, in very closely fought contests.

South Africa's Gift Mooketsi and Luvuyo Mbanda had to make do with the consolation of being named on the all-tournament team along with Mohamed Oulini, Abdelilha Gani and Abdelhak El Hadaoui of Morocco.

Algeria will get the chance to defend their African Men's Wheelchair Basketball Championship title on home courts as the event is also scheduled to take place there in 2015.
