Berlin is set to be awarded the 2018 European Athletics ChampionshipsNovember 1 - Berlin will tomorrow be officially awarded the 2018 European Athletics Championships with the German capital the only bidder for the event.

They will make a formal presentation of their bid to European Athletics when its ruling Council meets in Zurich.

The German Athletics Federation (DLV) had submitted their bid to European Athletics in February.

Berlin hosted one of the best-ever International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in 2009 with 417,156 tickets sold to watch the event at the Olympiastadion.

The economic impact to the city was estimated to be €120 million (£103 million/$156 million).

Highlights included Jamaica's Usain Bolt setting world records in the 100 and 200 metres and Britain's Jessica Ennis winning the heptathlon, while the mascot Berlino also proved to be a massive hit.

European Athletics last year switched the schedule so that its flagship Championships is now held every two years instead of every four.

The 2012 European Championships were staged in Helsinki - when 50 countries competed - while 2014 is scheduled for Zurich and 2016 for Amsterdam.

At the same meeting Paray-le-Monial in France will be presenting their bid to host the 2015 European Cross Country Championships.

Like Berlin, the commune in Burgundy is the only bidder.
