September 5 - Action from the 2013 IHF World Championships in SpainEight countries are bidding to host the 2019 World Handball Championship after five candidates dropped out of the original process.

Speaking to insidethegames, IHF competition's director, Patrick Strub confirmed that six bids have been submitted for the men's World Championships while Japan and Norway are the only two countries in the running for the women's World Championships.

Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Poland and a joint bid from Slovakia and Hungary are the bids up for consideration to host the men's event.

Thirteen countries had originally sent a letter of intent to the IHF confirming their interest in hosting the Championships, and they had until September 2 to send a basic outline of their bid to the world governing body and to reaffirm their desire to stage the event.

Tunisia and the Ukraine had initially declared an interest in hosting the women's World Championships only, while Macedonia had indicated it would be bidding for both Championships, but Struber confirmed that these countries had dropped out of the bidding race.

Slovakia had also declared a desire to host both World Championships, but has settled on submitting a joint bid with Hungary for the men's tournament.

The eight remaining bids will now have until October 11 to produce more detailed plans before they make presentations in Basle to Struber, Leon Kalin, chairman of the IHF Competition and Organising Commission, and the IHF managing director Amal Khalifa.

"We will discuss their bids on a technical level, in order to give them some hints and advice before they present to the IHF Council on October 28, when the Championships will be awarded," said Struber.

The final bid presentation to the IHF Council is due to take place at the IHF Congress in Doha, which runs from October 25 to 28.

The 2013 women's World Championships are set to take place in Serbia from December 7 to 22.

The next men's World Championship is due to be played in Qatar in 2015 and France in 2017, while the 2015 women's World Championships will take place in Denmark with the 2017 tournament in Germany.
