August 28 - Jeannete Chippington powered her way to three Paracanoeing golds in DuisbergThe first day of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Sprint World Championships in Duisberg saw Great Britain claim six medals in total with Jeanette Chippington bagging three golds equalling her haul from last year's event.

Chippington's compatriot Emma Wiggs also won gold along with Javier Reja of Spain and the Ukraine's Oleksandr Hrechko.

But it was the 43-year-old Chippington, a former swimmer who won 12 Paralympic medals, including two gold at Atlanta 1996, who was the dominant canoeist on the water in Germany as the sport continues its preparations for its Games debut at Rio 2016.

Her medal haul began in the V1 200 metres A [arms], as she finished ahead of Australia's Kara Kennedy and Anne Yoshida of the United States, and she followed that up with top spot in the V1 200m TA [trunk and arms] with Megan Blunk of the US and Brazil's Tamara Oliveira Da Silva of Brazil taking silver and bronze respectively.

The Maidenhead canoeist completed her gold medal haul when she finished ahead of the Ukraine's Svitlana Kupriianova and Russian Alexandra Dupik in the K1 200m A race.

"On the start line it's very lonely, thoughts start going through your mind, why am I doing this?," said Chippington, who made the switch from swimming to canoeing in 2011 and had already bagged six world titles before this year's Championships.

"But when you get that gold medal you realise what it's all for."

World Championship debutant Yoshida said she was proud of her bronze fist time out and vowed that she would only get better the more time she spends on the water.

"This is my first world sprints and I won a medal, so that's great," said the 34-year-old.

"But I still know that from this point on, it's only going to get better.

"I'm only going to get more fit.

"It proves to me that anybody, a person with a disability or with no disability, they can get to this point, if they just work hard."

It was gold for another British woman in the K1 200m TA event as Wiggs powered her way to victory finishing just ahead of Blunk, who picked up her second silver of the day, with Nataliia Lagutenko of the Ukraine in third.

Wiggs, the reigning European champion denied the American top spot by just five-hundredths-of-a-second.

"I feel absolutely incredible," said 33-year-old Wiggs, who was a member of the Britain's sitting volleyball that finished eighth at London 2012.

"I feel really, really worn-out, but I am absolutely chuffed."

Blunk, 23, was happy with her two silver medals but the experience has further whetted her appetite for gold success.

"It means that now I know what it feels like to be on the podium and I want to see the American flag in the middle up high [during the medal ceremony], instead of on the side," she said.

"And it makes me just want to fight that much harder and win next time."

In the men's V1 200m TA, Reja edged out Nicholas Heald of Britain to claim his first World Championship crown with Poland's Tomasz Mozdzierski picking up the bronze.

"I will celebrate with a jam sandwich and beer," said the 39-year-old Spaniard.

Meanwhile, in the V1 200m A race, Oleksandr Hrechko of the Ukraine was the top man as he finished in front of Poland's Jakub Tokarz and Daniel Hopwood of Britain.

Last year's champion Hopwood had finished fourth behind Luis Cardoso Da Silva, but the Brazilian was later disqualified for straying from his racing line promoting the Briton onto the podium.

"I'm disappointed not to win, having won it last year," said Hopwood.

"But, it [the competition] has stepped in class from last year, but I am happy I did the best I could."
