August 28 - Former England Sevens captain Ben Gollings has left his head coach role with Sri LankaEnglishman Ben Gollings has left his role as head coach of the Sri Lankan rugby sevens side due to travel and work commitments.

The former England sevens skipper, who is the all-time record points scorer in international sevens rugby with 2,652 points from 70 tournaments, was appointed to the role by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union in August 2012.

The 33-year-old was tasked with guiding the nation to qualification for the 2013 International Rugby Board (IRB) World Cup Sevens held in Moscow earlier this year.

At the time of taking on the role, the man from Cornwall was confident he had the players to mould a side that could challenge for qualification.

"I think there is a lot of potential; the boys have got some great skills, I think it's just a matter of trying to help them with those skills and understand what they are trying to do on the field and give them some form of a game plan and work a bit on their fitness," said Gollings, who played international sevens rugby for 11 years.

However, his Sri Lankan side missed out on qualification by finishing outside the top three spots at the Singapore Sevens tournament in November 2012, which saw Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines claim the Asian qualifying spots.

Gollings, who has a Commonwealth Games silver medal from Melbourne 2006, announced his retirement from international rugby in 2011 after the Rugby Football Union (RFU) decided not to offer him a new contract despite his desire to appear at Rio 2016 when the sport will be making its Olympic debut.

Former Sri Lankan player Nilufer Ibrahim has taken over the Gollings' post as head coach and will be thrown in at the deep end as his side prepares for the Asian Rugby Sevens Championships taking place this coming weekend (August 31-September 1).

Sri Lanka will be up against Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.
