Fenerbahçe have been banned from competing in Europe on match-fixing chargesAugust 28 - Turkish giants Fenerbahçe have been banned from competing in Europe on match-fixing charges for the second time in three seasons after their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) was unsuccessful.

Football's European governing body, UEFA, handed Fenerbahçe a two year-ban in June, just two years after they were withdrawn from competition by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) while under investigation for match-fixing.

A total of 93 players and officials were arrested in the match-fixing scandal last year, including Fenerbahçe chairman Aziz Yıldırım, who was jailed for six years before later being released upon appeal.

The CAS suspended the ban, allowing the 18-time Süper Lig champions to go into the draw for the UEFA Champions League final playoff round, in which they were beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Premier League side Arsenal, who completed the job last night with a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium courtesy of an Aaron Ramsey double.

The defeat meant that Fenerbahçe would have gone into the draw for the Europa League group stage, which takes place this Friday (August 30) in Monaco, but their place now looks likely to be filled by Kayserispor, who finished fifth in the Süper Lig last season, although the outcome will be determined tomorrow by the UEFA Emergency Panel prior to the group stage draw.

The CAS confirmed that the ban had been upheld in a statement earlier today, but the grounds for upholding the ban was not released "due to the urgency" of the decision.

"UEFA excluded Fenerbahçe SK of the UEFA club competitions for two seasons because of match-fixing," read a statement from the Swiss court.

"The Turkish club appealed such decision to the CAS and in agreement with the parties the CAS established an expedited procedural timetable and granted a stay of the UEFA decision to the Turkish club, allowing it to take part in the qualification phase of the current edition of the Champions League until the outcome of the CAS appeal was known.

"A two-day hearing was held at the CAS headquarters on 21 and 22 August 2013.

"Pursuant to the UEFA decision, which is now confirmed by the CAS, Fenerbahçe SK is excluded from two editions of the UEFA club competitions."

The CAS also confirmed that Ukrainian side FC Metalist Kharkiv have been banned from taking part in this season's Europa League after their one season ban for match-fixing was upheld.

UEFA has since moved to show its support to the rulings, releasing a statement this morning.

"UEFA welcomes today's decisions of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejecting the appeals made by Fenerbahçe SK and FC Metalist Kharkiv against the UEFA Appeals Body decisions of 15 July 2013 and 14 August 2013 respectively," it said.
