August 26 - The Ukraine womens relay team celebrate after winning gold in KaohsiungUkrainian trio Ganna Buriak, Viktoria Tereshuk and Iryna Khokhlova secured women's team relay gold in the Fengshan Stadium in Kaohsiung at the Modern Pentathlon World Championships, while Hungary bagged silver ahead of third placed Russia, on the penultimate day of competition.

Consistency throughout the event was the name of the game for the Ukrainians as a third place finish in the fencing competition was followed by the second fastest time in the pool.

Entering the equestrian competition, Buriak, Tereshuk and Khokhlova were already in a strong position and they rammed home that dominance with a maximum score of 1,200 points during the ride which set them up for the gold.

Buriak's superb shooting performance in the combined event was enough to ensure top honours for the Ukrainian team.

Hungary collected its first medal of the Championships following Zsofia Folhazi, Leila Gyenesei and Sarolta Kovacs's performance which saw them come in second overall, while the Russian squad of Donata Rimsaite, Liudmila Kukushkina and Alise Fakhrutdinova bagged the bronze.

Britain's Kate French, Freyja Prentice and Mhairi Spence began the final combined event down in sixth place but a strong showing in the run/shoot competition saw them climb up the leaderboard but it was not enough to snatch a podium position and saw Britain finish in fourth spot for the second day in succession following yesterday's mixed relay.

French and Spence had already secured the women's team crown along with Samantha Murray earlier in the week.

"They were a little bit flat in the fencing today and they didn't have a particularly good ride," said Pentathlon GB performance director, Jan Bartu.

"They managed to claw back a few places in the combined event, but unfortunately they weren't in a position to fight for the medals."

The final day of action in Chinese Taipei tomorrow sees the men's relay competition taking place.
