August 22 - New mountain bike marathon event to take place at Pentlands Regional ParkA new event, the Edinburgh Pentlands Mountain Bike Marathon, is set to take place within the Pentlands Regional Park in the Scottish capital on September 28 and 29.

Organised by Rare Management, the firm behind the mountain bike World Cup staged at Fort William, the new event is aimed at riders of all abilities from recreational riders and weekend warriors to pro endurance racers, and entries are now open for the competition which is being supported by the City of Edinburgh Council.

Riders will have the choice of three courses that all start and finish at Swanston Farm, and all include a wide variety of surfaces, gradients and technical challenges including a single loop of 47 kilometres that climbs and descends over 1,400 metres, a longer 78km distance and then a full 94km marathon which consists of two laps of the 47km loop.

All three routes will also include a climb that ascends 170m in one kilometre.

The final route map is still to be finalised, but competitors will ride from the edge of Edinburgh out into the surrounding hills and back along trails that consist of old droving routes, dirt roads, well-maintained wide trails and technical singletracks that criss-cross the Pentland Hills.

"The Council is delighted to be supporting this exciting new addition to the city's packed events calendar," said Edinburgh's festivals and events champion, Councillor Steve Cardownie.

"The event offers a range of challenging routes through the Pentland Hills, giving riders of all abilities an opportunity to take part while enjoying breathtaking views over Scotland's capital city."

On Saturday September 28 there will also be a number of age group mountain bike races for those too young to enter the main marathon competition - under eights to 18 year-olds.

This will be followed by a tough timed one kilometres hill sprint on an access road at Howden Burn with £1,000 ($1,500/€1,160) in prize money.

Next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will see athletes competing at the purpose-built Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike course to the south of the city.
