Located on the Firth of Clyde coast in Southwest Scotland, the links course staged the women's British Open once before in 2002.

That year Australian Karrie Webb claimed the sixth of her seven career majors and the 38-year-old is looking forward to competing again on the course.

"I am really pleased to hear that the Ricoh Women's British Open will be returning to Turnberry," she said.

"I have wonderful memories of winning the 2002 Championship and I can't wait to return in 2015.

"Turnberry is one of the best courses I have played so I hope I can continue on from where I left off in 2002."

The men's Open Championship has been held at Turnberry on four occasions, and the first of these in 1977 witnessed the famous "Duel in the Sun" between Americans Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, with Watson just prevailing on the final hole of the tournament.


In 1986, 1994 and 2009 Australian Greg Norman, Nick Price from Zimbabwe and the United States' Stewart Cink all claimed their first major wins at the Scottish course.

Webb won the Ladies European Masters last weekend at Buckinghamshire Golf Club, and goes into this week's 37th women's British Open at St Andrews in good form.

But she will face stiff competition from South Korean pair Shin Jiyai, the defending champion and world number one Inbee Park who is in formidable form this year.

Victory at St Andrews will see the 25-year-old become the first woman in history to win four consecutive major titles, following wins at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, LPGA Championship and US Women's Open in 2013.
