GB Men winning team with trophyJuly 30 - British charity Help for Heroes will be represented by a team made up of wounded servicemen and veterans in an exhibition match against members of the GB wheelchair basketball squads at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park's Copper Box next month.

The Help for Heroes team will take to the court against members of both the men's side, who retained their European crown in Frankfurt last month, and the women's team, the bronze medal at the Championships, prior to the British men's basketball team's warm-up game for September's EuroBasket in Slovenia against Puerto Rico on August 11.

GB women's wheelchair basketball player Kirsty Wallace, who has been supported through Help for Heroes and their Battle Back programme, said: "I'm really looking forward to playing in the H4H (Help for Heroes) team against a GB selection team in front of such a crowd.

"It's an excellent opportunity to exhibit the wheelchair version of the able bodied game to people who may not have seen it before; showing them it is just as explosive and entertaining.

"Hopefully it'll inspire people to try it for themselves.

"H4H and Battle Back have done so much to support me on my journey to compete for GB at the recent European Championships and I was honoured to be asked to play for them."

The Battle Back programme, run in partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MOD), was conceived in 2008 and has helped many injured servicemen, including six members of the British Paralympic squad for London 2012, rebuild their lives through sport and physical activity from grass-roots to elite performance levels.

Help for Heroes head of physical recovery Martin Colclough is anticipating a fantastic spectacle as the Help for Heroes team prepares to face some of the world's top wheelchair basketball players in front of a bumper crowd.

"The exhibition match promises to be an exciting, adrenaline fuelled game for both participants and supporters alike," he said.

"Sport is such an important part of the recovery process, helping an individual physically but also socially and psychologically too.

"Wheelchair Basketball is a favourite with the guys and girls and we're honoured to have been invited to put together a team to compete at such an iconic venue.

"The talent in the grass-roots Help for Heroes team is extremely promising and they'll certainly put the GB team through their paces."

The exhibition match between the Help for Heroes team and the GB wheelchair basketball squad is due to take place at 1.15 pm, before the men's senior basketball team look to build momentum for the EuroBasket next month against Puerto Rico at the Copper Box.

Tickets for the event are available here.
