Andrew Parsons brazilJuly 16 - Andrew Parsons, President of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), has confirmed his candidacy for vice-president of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

The IPC Governing Board member was re-elected to lead the CPB for a final four-year term – the organisation's statutes allow a board member to run for re-election only once – at a meeting in Brasília in March, and now has his sights set on the top body in the Paralympic Movement.

Under Parsons, the son of expatriate British parents, the CPB and Paralympic sport in Brazil has enjoyed a positive progression – the nation's athletes jumped from ninth place at the Beijing 2008 Games to seventh at London 2012, and is now aiming for a fifth place finish on home soil at Rio 2016.

Parsons, who is currently helping to assess the host city bids for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games as part of the Evaluation Commission, will now look to the IPC General Assembly on November 23 and 24 in Athens, Greece, which is where the elections will take place for the IPC President, vice-president and ten governing board seats.

Parsons is likely to see himself up against incumbent Greg Hartung, who is also President of the Australian Paralympic Committee.

It was originally thought that Hartung could be a potential contender for the Presidential position, but it now appears more likely that the Australian will stand for re-election as vice-president rather than against Sir Philip Craven for the most powerful position in the Paralympic Movement.

As per the IPC Code of Conduct for Candidates to Election, nor the CPB neither Parsons are able to make any further public comment on the nomination and IPC electoral process prior to the official public announcement by the IPC of all valid candidatures for election.
