173068935July 6 - Marion Bartoli of France has won her first ever Grand Slam title at the age of 28 after she dominated against Germany's Sabine Lisicki 6-1, 6-4 in the ladies singles final on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

Lisicki had begun as the pre-game favourite, and when Bartoli's service was broken in the first game it looked as though the player that defeated number one seed Serena Williams earlier in the tournament would take the early initiative, but the Frenchwoman immediately broke back, and went on to take another five consecutive sets to ease through the first set.

Lisicki came out firing in the second set, taking the first game with relative ease on her own service, but Bartoli again shut the door on the number 23 seed, holding her service before breaking serve once more to make it 2-1.

Bartoli held her serve once more to make it 3-1, before Lisicki threw away her chances and handed another break of service for her 28-year-old opponent.

By this point, Lisicki had long lost her composure and was reduced to tears on the court as a ruthless Bartoli smashed through her next service game to love, requiring just one more game to take her first ever Grand Slam win, and without dropping a single set in the process.

But just moments after Lisicki had lost her composure, it was Bartoli throwing chances away, losing two Championship points on the German's service and eventually losing the game.

Serving for the Championship, Bartoli's nerves were showing, and an error-filled game including a double fault saw her broken as Lisicki made it 6-3 and a seemingly unlikely comeback became a possibility.

Lisicki looked like a completely different player after saving two Championship points, and she once again took advantage of her opponent's nerves to claw it back to 5-4, but Bartoli finally pulled off the victory in her next service game to ensure that she would finally have a Grand Slam title on her honours list.

"I think I was just overwhelmed by the whole situation but credit to Marion, she has been in that position before and she handled it well," said Lisicki, who was unable to control her emotions again as she took questions following her defeat.

"I just can't believe it, I dreamt about this moment for so long," said Bartoli following her exuberant celebrations, who also backed her opponent to win the singles title in the future.

The men's final is due to place tomorrow, where world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia takes on the home favourite Andy Murray, who will be appearing at his second consecutive final.
