148940434July 3 - Australia's four-time Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Libby Trickett has announced her retirement at the age of 28 due to a persistent wrist injury.

Trickett, known by her maiden name Lenton until 2007, competed at the last three Olympic Games in an illustrious career which saw her take eight long course world titles, seven short course world titles and five Commonwealth Games gold medals in front of her home crowd in Melbourne.

She also competed at London 2012 as part of the women's 4x100 metres relay freestyle team that won gold and set a new Olympic record in one of few highlights for Australia in the pool last summer.

"There will always be a tinge of sadness to leave the sport that I love, but I have wonderful memories and experiences to draw upon in the future," Trickett said in a statement.

"I feel at peace with my decision and most importantly I feel that I am finally ready to take on the next adventure in my life."

Trickett initially retired in December 2009, citing a need for "space" and a lack of goals left for her in the sport, but she made her return within the year in order to try and qualify for London 2012.

She will now try her hand in sports media by linking up with Australia's Network Ten.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge, fun and craziness that this next phase has in store for me and working in television has always been a dream of mine so I feel very blessed to have this opportunity," she said.
