Todd Hodgetts London 2012June 12 - A team of 40 athletes has been confirmed by Australia for the 2013 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Lyon next month.


In February, the first four members of the squad were confirmed with London 2012 Paralympic champions Evan O'Hanlon, Kelly Cartwright, Richard Colman and Todd Hodgetts (pictured) selected.

A further 19 were named at the conclusion of the 2013 Qantas Australian Athletics Championships earlier this month with 17 more added at the final selectors meeting in accordance with the selection policy.

"Following the release of quota spots for the Australian team by the IPC, the Athletics Australia Selectors are very pleased to announce this final instalment of athletes to compete at the IPC Athletics World Championships," said Athletics Australia chairman of selectors Dion Russell.

"The team now stands at 40, a very healthy size, and in an outstanding result all athletes that achieved at least one AA 'B' Qualifier have been selected."

Selected on the basis of their recent Athletics Australia 'B' qualifying performance are male athletes Nathan Arkley, Sam Carter, Brayden Davidson, Nicholas Hum, Jake Lappin, Chad Perris, Ian Speed, Tim Sullivan and Lindsay Sutton amd female athletes Nicole Harris, Torita Isaac, Brydee Moore, Noni Thompson, Taylor Doyle, Stephanie Schweitzer, Erinn Walters and Carly Salmon.

"This is a great team, it is the biggest and best that we could have selected and it will be very competitive when it takes to the field of play to compete," said Athletics Australia Paralympic preparation programme manager and team leader Andrew Faichney.

"The squad selected includes all four gold medallists from the London 2012 Paralympic Games, four reigning world champions from Christchurch two years ago and multiple Oceania or world record holders.

"Additionally, it includes nine debutants, which is a positive result as we look ahead to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio."

The World Championships in Lyon are due take place from July 19 until 28 while they will be the first major international athletics competition since London 2012.

The Australian team are due to depart for a preparation camp in Nottwil in Switzerland on July 7 before arriving in Lyon on July 15.
