ASOIFMay 28 - Ukraine's Sergey Bubka, Ireland's Pat McQuaid and Taiwan's C K Wu have secured their spots on the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) Council in a four-horse race that saw Germany's Dr. h.c. Klaus Schormann miss out at the organisation's General Assembly here.

The battle to join ASOIF's ruling seven-member Council saw McQuaid and Bubka seeking re-election for a second four-year term while a third spot was up for grabs as sailing's Göran Petersson of Sweden was stepping down from the Council having served the maximum of two four-year terms - opening the door for Wu and Schormann to stand and make it four candidates for three spots.

In a secret ballot, all 28 International Sport Federations were given a slip with the four candidates and asked to select three of them.

Following the vote, International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) vice-president Bubka and International Boxing Association (AIBA) President Wu received an overwhelming majority and both secured spots on the Council.

Bubka received 28 votes while Wu - who is also ASOIF's sole representative on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board - received 26 votes.

However, International Cycling Union (UCI) President McQuaid and International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) President Schormann finished joint last with just 15 votes each.

The situation meant a second secret ballot featuring just McQuaid and Schormann.

Following the second round, McQuaid was re-elected to the Council, beating Schormann by 16 votes to 12 votes.

It will be a relief for McQuaid, who was crushed by 20 votes to eight by Wu in the race for ASOIF's seat on the IOC Executive Board at their 2012 General Assembly in May last year in Québec City.

Since that disappointment, McQuaid has suffered major problems in his own sport due to the fallout from the Lance Armstrong doping scandal – with calls continuing for his resignation.

"Thank you for placing your trust in me," said McQuaid, following his defeat of Schormann at the second time of asking.

"I would also like to thank Klaus for a great campaign.

"It turned into a bit of a shootout between the two of us at the end there which created excitement and tension for everyone so thank you Klaus.

"In the last few months, I have faced a lot of tough problems within my own federation and learnt an awful lot in that time.

"That experience and learning will be available to all of the members of ASOIF whenever you should require it."

Elsewhere Bubka and Wu, who are both standing to replace Jacques Rogge as IOC President when he steps down in Buenos Aires on September 10 this year, expressed their thanks after easily securing their own Council spots.

"Let me express my gratitude at being re-elected to the Council," said Bubka.

"It is a great honour and I will continue to work as hard as I possibly can for this organisation."

Wu was equally delighted.

"I am very touched at being elected to the Council," Wu said.

"Last year, you showed great trust and confidence in me when you elected me as ASOIF's representative on the IOC Executive Board.

"I thank you for showing that same trust and confidence in me once again."
