Marine Corpswarriorgames2013May 16 - The Marine Corps secured their fourth Chairman's Cup with a haul of 93 medals of the 264 awarded at the 2013 Warrior Games to outperform the other service branches at the competition, which concluded at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

The Marines (pictured top) claimed 100 points to top the Army, which finished with 85 points, thanks to their 34 gold, 33 silver and 26 bronze medals, which also saw them leading the medal count in shooting, swimming, and track and field.

Their win was highlighted by a 2-0 victory over the defending champions, the Army, in the sitting volleyball gold medal game.

The Navy came third, while the Air Force and Special Operations took fourth and fifth place respectively at the 2013 event, which Britain's Prince Harry - a Captain in the Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry Regiment who has undertaken two tours of duty of Afghanistan - helped open.

Air Force Captain Mitchell Kieffer was crowned the Ultimate Champion after he clinched silver in the 10-metre prone air rifle competition, and finished fourth in both the men's bicycle open event and 50m freestyle swimming.

Kieffer, who has a traumatic brain injury from injuries sustained when his convoy was attacked in Baghdad, also finished seventh in the men's 100m and eighth in the shot put in the track and field events.

He now joins inaugural winner US Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel Hathorne, Staff Sergeant Scott Martin, Marine Corps Veteran, and two-time winner Marine Captain Jonathan Disbro as the Warrior Games Ultimate Champions.

Marine Sergeant Jorge Toledo finished second in the Ultimate Champion competition, with veteran Marine Sergeant Brian Riley taking third.

"Congratulations to all of the 2013 Warrior Games competitors," said Charlie Huebner, chief of Paralympics for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).

"While we celebrate medals, this competition is really an example of how sport can change lives.

"We hope these service members and veterans don't stop here.

"The goal is for them to return home and get involved in sport programmes in their communities."

The Warrior Games features five US teams - Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force and Special Operations - and the British Armed Forces team, bringing together 260 wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans to challenge for medals held over six days of competition.
