Gwen Jorgensen wins Yokohama May 11 2013May 12 - Tsunekazu Takeda, President of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and Tokyo 2020, has praised the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Series event which took place in Yokohama yesterday claiming he was "truly inspired" by the competition.

The IOC member attended the event in the Tokyo Bay city, where he watched Britain's London 2012 bronze medallist Jonathan Brownlee take gold ahead of Spain's Javier Gómez in the men's race, and American Gwen Jorgensen (pictured top) claim the women's title to secure her place at the top of the overall rankings.

"I sincerely congratulate the ITU's delivery of an amazing competition that consistently provided athletes, spectators and officials with the highest standards for an international event," Takeda said.

"The rapidly growing sport had more than 1,200 participants from the general public this year, one of the largest numbers ever in Japan.

"Medallists from the London 2012 Games fuelled the excitement, and the Para-triathlon is now an ITU-sanctioned event, following its third competition.

"I saw plenty of media and spectators turn up, and I was truly inspired by the amazing power of sport to unite and inspire.

"The whole city came together along the beautiful waterfront to support the athletes and enjoy the celebration.

"I personally was very impressed by the performances, and the atmosphere filled me with renewed passion and enthusiasm for the power of sport."

Home athlete Yuka Sato, the first ever Youth Olympic Games gold medallist at Singapore 2010, ranked highest among the Japanese athletes at the event finishing in 11th place.

The 21-year-old explained how she was impressed by the large crowd and said what it would mean to her if Tokyo secured the right to host the 2020 Games.

"The most wonderful part of competing in Japan is the energy I receive from the fans' strong support," Sato said.

"I really hope Tokyo hosts the 2020 Games, and should I have the honour of competing there I will give my all to ensure I win a medal."

Tokyo is up against Madrid and Istanbul in the bid race to host the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, with the winner due to be named at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Buenos Aires on September 7 this year.
