matt-cowdreyMay 7 - Matt Cowdrey, the 13-time Paralympic champion, has been named in a formidable 19-strong Australian team that will compete at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Montreal in August.


The 24-year-old star from Adelaide, born with part of his arm missing due to a congenital amputation, proved one of the stars at London 2012 as he stormed to five golds, two silvers and a bronze and he will be looking to continue his dominance in Canada when the World Championships take place from August 12 to 18.

Cowdrey head a team that boasts 18 Paralympic golds, seven silvers and 13 bronzes medals between them.

Ellie Cole, winner of four gold medals at London 2012, is also named despite a niggling shoulder injury while double Paralympic silver medallist Taylor Corry will also be one of Australia's biggest medal hopes at the event.

Freestyle specialist Brenden Hall will is named as he looks to defend his S9 400 metres freestyle World Championship title while there will are high hopes for London 2012 competitors Blake Cochrane, Maddison Elliott and Daniel Fox after all three broke world records at the selection trials at the recent 2013 Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide to ensure their selection.

The Australian team also includes Tim Antalfy, Rowan Crothers, Richard Eliason, Matt Haanappel, Matthew Levy, Grant Patterson, Rick Pendleton, Sean Russo, Kayla Clarke, Katherine Downie, Amanda Fowler and Teigan Van Roosmalen.

The event at Montreal's Parc Jean-Drapeau Aquatic Complex will see Swimming Australia's high performance director of Paralympic swimming, Adam Pine at the helm for his first international competition as head of the programme.
