Susan Powell 010513May 1 - Reigning world champions Susan Powell and David Nicholas are among the athletes to have been named on the Australian squad heading to the 2013 International Cycling Union (UCI) Paracycling Road World Championships taking place in the Canadian city of Baie-Comeau later this year.

As well as Powell (pictured top) - gold and silver medallist at London 2012 in the C4 individual pursuit and time trial respectively - and Nicholas - gold medal winner in the individual C3 time trial and bronze in the individual road race at last summer's Games - other big names include Paralympic T2 time trial champion Carole Cook, seven-time world champion and two-time Paralympic champion Michael Gallagher and H3 handcycling time trial silver medallist in London, Nigel Barley.

There are also plenty of debutants among the squad, including Bianca Woolford and Alistair Donohue, who secured selection with their impressive domestic form.

"The team has a very strong blend of experience with our more experienced and medal potential athletes being joined by several young athletes who have recently put their hand up which is great to see," said Paracycling performance director and head coach Peter Day.

"With the selection of six handcyclists across the various classifications, selectors continued Cycling Australia and the Australian Paralympic Committee's initiative to progressively and strategically strengthen the Australian contingent across the very competitive disciplines within international handcycling."

As preparation for the World Championships, which is due to take place from August 29 to September 1, the riders will depart Australia in early August to compete in the UCI World Cup event in Matane on August 23.

"We see this World Cup as a tremendous opportunity for the athletes, who will still be acclimatising and adjusting to time differences, to compete in an international event as part of their preparation for the world championships," Day added.
