Maria MillerApril 12 - Maria Miller, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has claimed that appointing the right new chairs for UK Sport and Sport England is of vital importance which is why her Department is taking their time over recruiting two individuals.

Miller's Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) announced in January this year that they were looking to recruit two individuals to replace outgoing UK Sport chair Baroness Sue Campbell and Sport England chair Richard Lewis.

The two new chairs were scheduled to be announced last month but the appointments have been delayed as the DCMS continue their search, with the announcement now set to come later this month.

"Leadership is really important in both of these sporting organisations," Miller told insidethegames.

"Getting the right people in place is of fundamental importance to make sure we keep that momentum from London 2012 going forwards and to maintain the success that we saw last year.

"Sport England is vital for driving participation right across the board, particularly at grass roots, while UK Sport is vital for making sure we keep that London 2012 success going elite level.

"So getting the right leadership in place is crucial and something we are working very hard to do."

As reported by insidethegames, Britain's 11-time Paralympic wheelchair racing champion Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson is set to be installed as Sport England chair having been backed in her application by a number of high-profile figures, including London 2012 and British Olympic Association (BOA) chairman Sebastian Coe.

The lead contenders to replace Campbell as UK Sport chair are former yachting supremo Rod Carr, financier and Gulf War veteran Mark Hanson and ex-England hockey chief  Phillip Kimberley, who are all current members of the UK Sport Board.

British Athletics chairman Ed Warner is also one of the contenders, although is considered to be an outsider.

Recommendations made by the interviewing panels are currently being reviewed by Miller, who must endorse the respective appointments, and Sports Minister Hugh Robertson.
