British basketball London 2012March 22 - British Basketball is to receive more than £7 million to help it prepare for Rio 2016 after UK Sport reversed its decision to axe its funding following last year's Olympics, it was announced today.

The funding, which in total is worth £7,039,840 ($10,721,676/€8,254,082), will be on a one-year conditional basis, the Government agency said in a statement, with the full amount allocated only being released if basketball meets performance criteria.

Wheelchair fencing, which had also had its funding cut to zero, has also been awarded financial support from the body for an initial 12 months.

They have been awarded just over £1,008,608 ($1,536,109/€1,182,574), while women's beach volleyball has had its funding increased from £386,753 ($589,024/€453,460) to £514,000 ($782,822/$€602,655).

Britain fielded an Olympic basketball team for the first time since 1948 at last year's London Games - losing seven of their eight matches.

UK Sport has a "no-compromise" approach to funding sports, with most money going to traditionally strong medal hopes such as cycling and rowing while those without realistic chances of podium places get next to nothing.

It brings to a total of 44 sports and disciplines funded by UK Sport in the run-up to Rio with the aim of improving on the 65 Olympic and 120 Paralympic medals won in London, when Britain finished third in both overall medals tables.
